Park Updates: Wildlife Call
Cooler temperatures bring the wildlife in Yellowstone back to lower country. Bear, Elk, Bison, Wolves, and other species are more easily seen by eager visitors. The Lamar Valley continues to be a primary wildlife concentration, particularly at dawn and dusk.
Yellowstone Elk
But in the fall, many of the elk populations congregate around Mammoth Hot Springs' lawn as well! They wander about enjoying the last of the green grass.
Wapiti (Native American word for Elk) are especially gallant in autumn. Dressed in their finest coats ("formal attire" as my mother says) and full racks of antlers, the males are out to impress the ladies.
Bugle calls and mighty battles ensue for first pick during the mating season (the rut). They put on a spectacular show. Did you know Elk antlers can weigh between 15 and 25 pounds?
Park your car at Mammoth on a full moon night, roll down the windows, and listen to bugling elk - it is unforgettable.
The Flying Pig will continue to offer Wildlife Tours thru September, if you'd like to join us call soon to book. Spend a day out and about with a wildlife expert!
