November Greetings

Get ready for Turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie! The holiday of gorging is almost here. We eagerly await the arrival of the family and friends coming to share Thanksgiving.

Our tradition is a short cross country ski that morning - usually we have to take our "rock skis" as the snow is a little sparse - followed by the first Christmas tunes while we whip up a feast. The Flying Pig wishes you all a joyous holiday. We are thankful for your business and support.

Welcoming Winter

Winter is fast approaching Yellowstone! Mountaintops are already covered with snow, and although the weather has warmed a bit we have already had several inches of snow in the valleys.

Snowshoeing

Perhaps Montana ski resorts will open for Thanksgiving with powder! Big Sky, Moonlight Basin, and Bridger Bowl are our local (1hr-3hrs drive) downhill resorts and of course we have amazing cross country skiing and back-country skiing in the more immediate back yard.

Cross country skiing and snowshoeing inside Yellowstone Park is a must do on life's list...the definition of serene. It is possible to take a snow coach into the parks interior and get off anywhere you choose for a ski. Groomed trails at Tower Falls and Blacktail are also spectacular! If you're really ambitious, ski one of the loops and camp out along the way.

If you want to come play in Gardiner, Yellowstone, and the Paradise Valley, the Grizzly Den Vacation Rental is available at an off season price. And, the Yellowstone Association has a host of tour options in the park. We would love to help you plan a winter vacation...secretly, we think it's the best time to be here. Call the Flying Pig for more information 866-807-0744.

Local Snipits

Hunting season is in full swing we must now don our orange when out in the woods. Hells A Roarin, our partner horse outfitter in the summer, has had a successful season and sent all clients home with Elk.

The only year-round entrance to Yellowstone

The Cutler Fightin' Perch, Gardiner's pond hockey team have also begun their season. Last year they became big time and joined the men's hockey leagues in Bozeman.

They commute an hour and a half each way for games twice a week! You've never met a nicer bunch of hockey players. So far they're 2-2.

After-School Adventure Camp is just wrapping up the fall session. Hosted by Flying Pig owners Geoff and Liza, it is a non-profit group targeting local 4th-6th graders interested in outdoor recreation and education, the arts, science, team building, and just plain fun!

Profits from the Flying Pig Adventure Co. help make this program possible at no cost to the kids, thank you Pig supporters.

The highlight this fall: while exploring the Travertine, the kids found and correctly identified, a fully intact vertebrae and rib cage of a Bison. Only in Yellowstone!

Annual Photo Contest

It's that time again; the Second Annual Yellowstone Photo Contest is accepting submissions.

Yellowstone Grizzly Bear

Hiking in Bear Country

Be Smart! Don't let "bear incidents" stop you from enjoying Yellowstone's wonderful backcountry.

Carry bear-spray, hike in groups on established paths, and make noise when you are hiking into a blind spot.

If bears still intimidate you, try a Guided Hike.
