What to expect on Your Yellowstone River Rafting Trip

So you have decided to Raft the Yellowstone River with the Flying Pig team and the day of your trip is finally here. You’ll immediately be greeted by one of our staff (or shop dogs), and make your way outside to meet your friendly rafting guide and get geared up for some of the best whitewater the Yellowstone area has to offer. Make sure to grab a hat and sunscreen, because it can get warm on the River!

First we will talk about river safety, and then will make our way down to the River just behind the shop where your boats will be waiting for you and your guide. We start off with some very exciting class 2 & 3 waves that will be sure to kick off our trip with a bit of excitement. This is what is known as the “Town Stretch” to the Gardiner locals and provides a great start to the rafting trip. We will pass the Old Yellowstone Railroad which parallels the Yellowstone river along the Parks northern boundary. Then we will make our way past Electric Peak, which, as the second tallest Peak in the Park, towers over the surrounding valley. On this stretch, you may see a variety of wildlife that frequents the river. It is common to see elk and deer come down to the river’s edge for a drink, and if you are lucky, maybe even an eagle or an osprey flying overhead searching for trout in the river’s shallows.

We will continue paddling through some great whitewater and there will be other opportunities to swim during the calmer stretches and for the kids to show off their cannonball skills. We will pass La Duke hot springs, the fabled Devil’s Slide, and Beattie Gulch. These calmer stretches are a great opportunity to talk to your guide about some of the history of Yellowstone, or to figure out some local intel for things to do or see in Yellowstone Park for the remainder of your vacation.

For those on the 8 mile trip, we will take out about 8 river miles north of town, where your guides will load up the boats and then we will take a short bus ride back to our shop in Gardiner. We will have pictures of your trip in the office available for purchase and you all will have an opportunity to say goodbye to your raft guide and the shop dogs.

If this sounds like a trip that would be a memorable experience for your family, please give us a call at 888-792-9193. We would love to be a part of your Yellowstone adventure!
